Kenya’s rich biodiversity faces constant threats from poaching, habitat destruction, and human-wildlife conflict. As part of its mission, The Wildlife Foundation (TWF) has intensified efforts to protect wildlife dispersal areas, combat poaching, and promote coexistence between communities and wildlife.
Through collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), local rangers, and conservation partners, TWF continues to implement advanced anti-poaching measures while empowering communities to take an active role in conservation.
TWF supports trained community rangers who patrol wildlife dispersal areas to deter poachers and monitor illegal activities. These rangers work closely with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and use modern surveillance methods, including:
GPS tracking for real-time monitoring
Radio communication networks to coordinate responses
Regular foot and vehicle patrols to ensure security
With 70+ camera traps installed in key locations, TWF uses this technology to:
Monitor wildlife movement and behavior
Detect unauthorized human activities in conservation areas
Provide valuable data for conservation planning
Human-wildlife conflict remains one of the biggest threats to conservation. To prevent retaliatory killings of predators, TWF has deployed solar-powered Lion Lights, which:
Deter lions and other predators from attacking livestock
Reduce the need for harmful retaliatory killings
Promote peaceful coexistence between communities and wildlife
Educating communities about the importance of conservation is a core pillar of TWF’s strategy. Through school visits, community workshops, and Maasai cultural education, TWF:
Raises awareness on the dangers of poaching
Encourages sustainable land-use practices
Strengthens wildlife protection laws at the grassroots level
✅ Reduced poaching incidents through increased surveillance and patrols
✅ Improved wildlife security in key dispersal areas
✅ Greater community participation in conservation efforts
✅ Stronger enforcement of anti-poaching laws in collaboration with government agencies
Looking ahead, TWF aims to:
✔ Expand community-led ranger programs
✔ Deploy more camera traps in critical areas
✔ Strengthen wildlife corridors to reduce human-wildlife conflict
TWF calls upon individuals, conservationists, and organizations to support anti-poaching initiatives and advocate for stronger wildlife protection policies. Together, we can secure a future where wildlife thrives, and communities benefit from conservation efforts.
